Largest Moulding and Millwork Firm Grows Bigger

BACK TO NEWS

March 28, 2022 | Bill Esler

Galt, CA—Metrie, the Vancouver, BC-based moulding and millwork manufacturer and distributor, acquired EL & EL Wood Products Corp. based in Galt, CA, giving it a pair of state-of-the-art distribution centers on the West Coast.

Metrie, founded in 1926 as Moulding & Millwork, and later Sauder Industries, rebranded in 2014 as Metrie—short for “geometry” in reference to its library of hundreds of profiles used in moulding fabrication. It has expanded its reach in the North American market through a series of acquisitions, expanding U.S. production with the 2014 acquisition of a millwork firm in Monroe, WA.

It supplies moulding to Lowe’s and Home Depot, and exhibits at the KBIS kitchen and bath industry show, marketing creative uses of millwork to designers. Its latest deal brings greater U.S. reach with EL & EL, a premier two-step distributor of moulding, millwork, and door products across the Southwest.

“Metrie is growing,” says Kent Bowie, president and CEO. “Until today’s announcement, we had a relatively small distribution footprint in California, the fifth largest economy in the world. This acquisition strengthens our efforts to provide the millwork industry with innovative solutions and will solidify our leadership position for customers across all North American markets. Both firms are family-owned.

“Combined with the 2020 acquisition of our Sacramento MDF manufacturing facility, we will add state-of-the-art distribution and fabrication facilities in Chino and Galt, CA,” Bowie says.

Cathy Wong, president of EL & EL, says, “It is time for me to pass the baton forward. We know that Metrie will take great care of that service promise and continue to grow the business and the relationships with our customers across the Southwest.”

Metrie, based in Vancouver, BC, operates six solid wood and MDF manufacturing facilities, plus 24 distribution centers in the U.S. and Canada, and ranks as the largest MDF moulding manufacturer in North America. FDMC magazine lists it as the largest Canadian wood products firm, with sales in 2021 of more than $1 billion.
