Virginia’s e-Region offers a strong foundation for wood products and wood manufacturing companies seeking a competitive East Coast location. Centered in Southwest Virginia, the region combines a rich forestry heritage, skilled manufacturing workforce, strategic transportation access, and low operating costs that support everything from sawmills and engineered wood products to cabinetry, trusses, furniture components, and specialty wood manufacturing. The region’s manufacturing base has deep roots in industrial production and fabrication, with companies experienced in precision manufacturing, welding, machining, and heavy equipment production. Workforce training partnerships with community colleges and the Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing (SVAM) help prepare workers for modern manufacturing technologies, automation, robotics, and industrial maintenance skills that directly support wood product operations. Virginia’s broader wood products industry is one of the strongest in the eastern United States, supported by abundant hardwood timber resources, more than 150 sawmills statewide, and established supply chains for lumber, engineered wood products, packaging, and finished wood goods. Southwest Virginia’s proximity to these resources creates opportunities for companies requiring reliable timber access and efficient shipping logistics. Transportation infrastructure is another major advantage. The e-Region provides access to Interstate 81, Interstate 77, U.S. 23, U.S. 58, U.S. 460, and the developing Coalfields Expressway, allowing manufacturers to efficiently serve customers across the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. The area is within a day’s drive of more than half of the U.S. population. In addition to available industrial sites and buildings, VCEDA offers financing and workforce development programs that can support recruitment, training, equipment, and facility expansion projects. These tools help manufacturers reduce startup and expansion costs while accelerating project timelines.
